WASHINGTON – U.S. Capitol police found an improvised explosive device along with several weapons and ammunition in a car near the Capitol building Friday and took the driver into custody, a spokeswoman said.
Sgt. Kimberly Schneider said Capitol police became suspicious after the driver approached an officer and asked a question. The officer saw a rifle case in the car and searched the vehicle.
Police found a rifle, ammunition and several weapons, including a grenade-like improvised explosive device, she said.
Schneider said the driver has not been charged yet and would not release the name.
Congress is in recess, but the Capitol is a popular tourist attraction.
