Del Mar Races 2008

Racing season ends with familiar Futurity winner

The 2008 summer thoroughbred racing season here ended the way the seven from 1996 through 2002 had.

With a Bob Baffert-trained 2-year-old, in yesterday's case Midshipman, winning the Del Mar Futurity and stirring visions of bigger races to come.

More News from Del Mar

Meet had share of weird, wacky at old Del Mar:The 69th Del Mar racing season, which concluded Wednesday, wasn't bad. But it felt a little off kilter, a little different, from other meetings we've known and generally loved over the years.

Losses aside, Del Mar still 'a sound ship': DEL MAR – If Joe Harper is feeling the pinch, it is in much the same way a moose feels a mosquito bite.

End of slow season: Jockeys have packed up their silk jerseys. Horses are trailered and ready for a road trip. The statue of Don Diego is waving farewell. Del Mar's 69th season of thoroughbred racing closed yesterday with deflated numbers that reflect an unstable economy.

That fantasy thing: Hank Wesch:

Wednesday's Del Mar Results:

In Year II, Polytrack flap still unsettled: Polytrack Year II, which concludes with the closing of the summer thoroughbred season here today, qualifies by most assessments as a success.

Baffert hopes to reawaken Futurity magic: It has been five years since trainer Bob Baffert has been required to make his way to the winner's circle following the Del Mar Futurity.

Stardom arrives in Debutante: Trainer Christopher Paasch said he waited about five years to name “just the right horse” Stardom Bound.

Monday's Winning Picks:

Madeo dishes upset in Del Mar Derby: The connections of the no-surprise victory by Zenyatta on the opening weekend of the month closed August with a surprise win by Madeo in yesterday's $350,000, Grade II Del Mar Derby.

His ascent goes from the floor to ceiling: The view of the races here has changed greatly for Randy Winick, literally and figuratively.

Late rush gives Vacare Palomar win: Vacare emerged from a line of six horses arrayed from the rail to the middle of the track in the deep stretch and produced a half-length victory in yesterday's $200,000, Grade II Palomar Handicap.

Unbridled fantasy:In a fit of creative brilliance and originality, Hank Wesch has chosen “change” as the byword for his '08 Del Mar fantasy betting campaign.

Slew's Tiznow wins in debut for O'Neill: Slew's Tiznow, a relative newcomer to the Doug O'Neill barn, found room on the rail on the second turn and moved smartly through it to a three-length win in yesterday's featured $108,700 El Cajon Stakes.

Hot - R Weekend :

Wake Up Maggie wins Adoration Stakes: Wake Up Maggie, ridden by Tyler Baze, took over the lead at midstretch and pulled away to a 2¾-length victory in yesterday's featured $86,000 Adoration Stakes.

Baffert's dessert: Ten Churros: Trainer Bob Baffert and jockey Clinton Potts had some extra reasons to celebrate in the winner's circle after yesterday's Generous Portion Stakes for 2-year-old California-bred fillies.

Gomez does bicoastal bounceback: Before the triumphs for Garrett Gomez came the fall. Sixth race, one week ago today. Gomez had to make a crash landing on the Polytrack at Del Mar when his mount, Bella Dancer, decided to take a sharp left a short way out of the gate, sending Gomez airborne.

Jockey pleads not guilty to threatening wife, cops: A judge yesterday set Garcia's bail at $50,000, according to court officials. He was being held in the Pasadena jail. The jockey is accused of making several threatening phone calls Thursday to his wife, who lives in Monrovia and has a restraining order against Garcia, said Monrovia police Lt. Rick Wagnon.

Spotlight on Del Mar: Looking back at Week 6:

Del Mar standings:

Jockey pleads not guilty to making threats: Jockey Matt Garcia, who was arrested in the Del Mar paddock area before Friday's first race, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to making threats against his wife and two police officers in Los Angeles County.

Smaller crowd bet less on Classic Day: Business on Pacific Classic Day didn't measure up to 2007 and the racing season will enter its final week here with minus numbers by comparison in all the major categories.
